Hashing
Choose an algorithm to hash text or files locally in your browser.
How to read these tool pages
Every algorithm page ends with an info card: a short description of the algorithm, a Status badge, a Speed badge, and a link to that algorithm's Wikipedia article for the full story.
Status
- Up to date | safeModern standard, no known practical attacks; recommended for new work.
- Still used | acceptableNo practical attacks, but not a first choice for new designs.
- Still used | unsafeStill encountered in the wild, but practically broken; never for security.
- Not used / non-applicableHistorical, withdrawn, or not a standalone deployed digest.
Speed
- FastQuick in this browser's WebAssembly engine.
- ModerateNoticeably slower than the fast group, still fine for typical inputs.
- SlowHeavy per byte; large files will take a moment.
- Not applicableSpeed rating does not apply.
New to hashing? The cryptographic hash function article on Wikipedia explains what these tools compute and why the differences matter. Each algorithm page links its own Wikipedia article as well.
